Support Rally: Bring Daniel Home!

Tuesday, 16 June at 10am At office of Quebec Minister of Immigration Kathleen Weil 5252, de Maisonneuve Ouest, Montréal (Vendôme metro) https://www.facebook.com/events/841244462577342/ “Daniel” (not his real name) arrived in Montreal with his mother when he was ten. When the family’s refugee application was refused, his mother made the difficult decision to remain in Canada without papers to protect her children. Thus, when he was 12 years old, Daniel joined the ranks of the half a million undocumented people living in Canada. In October 2014, Daniel was arrested in a Montreal-area school.  It happened on his 17th birthday, when he...

(May 28) Presentation: Resisting Capitalism, Borders and Global Apartheid

(May 28) Presentation: Resisting Capitalism, Borders and Global Apartheid

“OUR TERRAIN OF STRUGGLE”: Resisting Capitalism, Borders and Global Apartheid Thursday, May 28, 7pm 1500 de Maisonneuve West, #204 (métro Guy-Concordia) (facebook: www.facebook.com/events/435202943315001/) This multi-media presentation will explore the research and lived experiences that ground a “no one is illegal/no borders” analysis. Among the conclusions: all border controls are fundamentally racist; all nation-states are inherently oppressive; all human beings have the autonomous right to migrate, to resist displacement, and to return; and, in opposition to imposed notions of “race” or “community”, we struggle to assert self-determined identities. In a context of global apartheid, there are very specific challenges for grassroots...

Callout: Stop Deportations! Status for All! (May 2015)

Callout: Stop Deportations! Status for All! (May 2015)

CALLOUT: STOP DEPORTATIONS! STATUS FOR ALL! (Full details about the May 31 demonstration are available HERE.) This year, we march in opposition to growing austerity measures and in solidarity with grassroots resistance efforts in Montreal and across Turtle Island. Over the past few months, sweeping cuts to social services – from health care, housing assistance and employment aid, to social assistance and education, etc. – have been announced, putting the future and accessibility of these services at risk. This neoliberal offensive is taking place not just at the provincial level: the federal government has gutted employment insurance, slashed health...

Refugee Lottery Flash Mob at the IRB

Refugee Lottery Flash Mob at the IRB

A flash mob took over the space outside the Immigration and Refugee Board in Montreal earlier this morning. The group denounced the arbitrary nature of refugee board decisions and specifically to show their solidarity with the Nemeth family, a Roma refugee family facing deportation in two days (on Wednesday, January 28th). To the sound of the Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble, and with a giant Refugee Wheel of Fortune to illustrate the point, Solidarity Across Borders game show hosts explained that the Nemeth family’s refugee claim was rejected in 2013 by a commissioner whose acceptance rate for Hungarian claimants that year...
