{"id":1471,"date":"2012-05-26T12:04:13","date_gmt":"2012-05-26T16:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.solidarityacrossborders.org\/?p=1471"},"modified":"2014-04-24T12:26:44","modified_gmt":"2014-04-24T16:26:44","slug":"press-release-migrant-justice-groups-hold-annual-status-for-all-march-in-parc-extension-villeray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solidarityacrossborders.org\/en\/press-release-migrant-justice-groups-hold-annual-status-for-all-march-in-parc-extension-villeray","title":{"rendered":"Press Release: Migrant justice groups hold annual &#8220;Status for All&#8221; March in Parc Extension &#038; Villeray"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attention News Editors &#8211; For Immediate Release<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">MIGRANT JUSTICE GROUPS HOLDS ANNUAL \u2018STATUS FOR ALL MARCH\u2019 TO DENOUNCE REPRESSIVE IMMIGRATION POLICIES IN THE STREETS OF PARC EXTENSION &amp; VILLERAY<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Media Convened to Pre-March Press Point<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When:\u00a0<em>Saturday May 26<sup>th<\/sup>, 12:30PM<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><\/em><\/strong><strong>Where:\u00a0<em>Departure point for \u2018Status for All\u2019 March \u2013 corner of Boyer and Jean-Talon<\/em><em>\u00a0(metro Jean-Talon<\/em><\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Who:\u00a0<em>Paola Ortiz, No\u00e9 Ricardo Arteaga Santos, and representatives\u00a0<\/em><em>of\u00a0<\/em><em>No One Is Illegal, Dignidad Migrante, Mexicans United for\u00a0Regularization, Immigrant Workers\u2019 Centre, JOC-Montreal, and Solidarity Across Borders<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a climate of ongoing attacks on immigrant and refugee rights, various migrant justice groups are calling a press point ahead of the annual &#8216;Status for All&#8217; March taking place on Saturday May 26<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0The purpose of this march is to make space in the media and public discourse for a more real, deeper analysis of immigrant issues \u00a0says Rosalind Wong, member of Solidarity Across Borders and one of the march&#8217;s organizers. \u00ab\u00a0We\u2019re bringing light to positive solutions that are being built every day from the ground up in our communities.\u00a0\u00a0We reject the fear and division that the government is trying to create\u00a0in order to promote its own discriminatory and exploitative agenda\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>The march will highlight different realities being faced by refugees and asylum seekers, by temporary foreign workers and by people without status in Canada. Representatives from\u00a0<em>No One is Illegal, Dignidad Migrante, Mexicans United for Regularization, Immigrant Workers Centre, JOC-Montreal\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Solidarity Across Borders<\/em>\u00a0will speak to the march\u2019s main political demands: an end to deportations and detentions, the abolition of double punishment, and a full program of regularization for all residents of Quebec and Canada.\u00a0\u00a0Speakers will also highlight access to housing, health, and education, as part of a larger \u2018Solidarity City\u2019 campaign which aims at building networks of solidarity and support and a movement that works toward making Montreal a liveable place for everyone, regardless of immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>As happens every year, the organizers of the Status for All march encourage participants to wear masks in solidarity with thousands of people who live without status in Montreal, who cannot march with us tomorrow, and whose survival depend on remaining invisible and on the margins of society.\u00a0\u00a0Migrant justice groups maintain this important tradition knowing full well that in doing so we are in defiance of recently passed municipal bylaws and Law 78.\u00a0\u00a0We consider these measures to be unconstitutional and illegitimate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We maintain the right to protest freely and spontaneously, and will not be sharing the route of our march with the police.\u00a0\u00a0The family-friendly march will wind its way from Jean-Talon metro to ParcExtension, ending with a picnic.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0When I was alone, Immigration did what they wanted with me.\u00a0\u00a0When I was surrounded by people, I was protected.\u00a0\u00a0This is why I want to fight for the rights of other people just like me,\u00a0\u00bb says Paola Ortiz, a Mexican mother who after 7 months of separation from her children after being deported, was finally accorded permanent residency and allowed to return after her story received massive media coverage and popular support.
