MONTREAL CORPORATE ADVERTISING REPLACED WITH POLITICAL ART SUPPORTING IMMIGRANTS & STUDENTS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

LE\u00a0COLLECTIF\u00a0NO\u00a0BORDERS<\/em>\u00a0CLAIMS RESPONSIBILITY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

MONTREAL, May 23, 2012 — Yesterday morning, close to 100 street-level advertisements were replaced with immigrant justice and pro-student strike messages.<\/p>\n

Members of\u00a0Le\u00a0Collectif\u00a0No\u00a0Borders<\/em>\u00a0replaced the ads, opening up private advertising booths operated by Astral & Pattison in various Montreal neighborhoods and covering corporate advertising with\u00a0messages of solidarity, resistance and hope.<\/p>\n

The posters were put up on advertising panels in the following Montreal neighborhoods: Parc Extension, Rosemont, Plateau-Mt-Royal, Villeray, St-Michel, Montreal-Nord, St-Henri & Centre-Ville.<\/p>\n

Pourquoi pas nous? \/\u00a0Fronti\u00e8res – loi C31 – loi 78 – atteinte \u00e0 la libert\u00e9. \/\u00a0Les fronti\u00e8res tuent. \/\u00a0Fuck les fronti\u00e8res. \/\u00a0Premi\u00e8re, deuxi\u00e8me, troisi\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration: Nous sommes toutes immigrant-e-s sur une terre autochtone. \/\u00a0Indignez-vous. \/\u00a0La rabia del pueblo. \/\u00a0Tous et toutes uni(e)s pour un statut pour tou(te)s. \/\u00a0Solidarit\u00e9, entraide, ouverture. \/\u00a0No\u00a0borders,\u00a0no\u00a0nations, stop the deportations. \/\u00a0Non aux d\u00e9tentions. Abolissons les prisons. \/\u00a0Mettons fin \u00e0 la guerre contres les immigrantEs et r\u00e9fugi\u00e9-e-s. \/\u00a0Personne n’est ill\u00e9gal.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yesterday morning’s action directly challenges the capitalist advertising that clog our visual cityscape. In doing so,\u00a0Le\u00a0Collectif\u00a0No\u00a0Borders<\/em>\u00a0reclaimed public space and visibility for social justice messages, announcing our struggles for self-determination and against the criminalization of migration.<\/p>\n

The corporate ads were replaced as an act of solidarity at a time of escalating attacks on migrant communities. At present, it is estimated that more than 400 migrants remain behind bars in immigration detention facilities across the country. Deportations have also increased by more than 50% over the past decade, with more than 13,000 deported in 2009 alone. In February 2012, the federal Conservative government introduced the\u00a0Refugee Exclusion Act<\/em>(Bill C-31) that creates a racist, two-tiered refugee determination system. Yesterday’s action also included messages of solidarity and support with Quebec’s ongoing student general strike, including denunciations of the new special law (Bill C-78).<\/p>\n
