Immigrant Rights are Workers Rights<\/strong> CONTINGENT
\nAnti-Capitalist Mayday Demonstration

 <\/p>\n

For decades, immigrant workers have taken the streets on May 1st to\u00a0demand justice and equality. For example, in 2006, in the US, millions\u00a0of migrants organized mass mobilizations in defense of their rights\u00a0and for justice and dignity.<\/p>\n

This year, we take the streets in the context of increasing attacks\u00a0against migrant workers and against immigrant communities.<\/p>\n

WHY WE MARCH<\/p>\n

BECAUSE deportations from Canada have increased 14% since 2009<\/p>\n

BECAUSE Harper and the Canadian government are moving increasingly\u00a0towards temporary worker programs that exploit and use workers without\u00a0ever giving them a meaningful chance of obtaining permanent status in\u00a0Canada; last year, more people came to Canada as temporary workers\u00a0than as permanent residents<\/p>\n

BECAUSE temporary workers programs create a disposable workforce where\u00a0people do not have access to basic labor standards and where workers\u00a0can be sent back if they are injured, unable to work or stand up for\u00a0their rights; the non-status workers who work in restaurants, hotels,\u00a0factories and picking fruit are also part of this disposable workforce\u00a0in which people work under extremely exploitative conditions,\u00a0sometimes for less than minimum wage and with the constant fear of\u00a0detention and deportation<\/p>\n

BECAUSE Family sponsorships now take up to 14 years and refugee\u00a0acceptance rates have been cut by 56%<\/p>\n

BECAUSE the unemployment rate in immigrant communities is double the\u00a0Quebec average<\/p>\n

BECAUSE every day non-status migrants walk into clinics, food banks,\u00a0schools only to be denied access because of their immigration status<\/p>\n

BECAUSE Racist immigration policies are creating conditions of modern\u00a0day slavery<\/p>\n

BECAUSE the Canadian state continues to resist indigenous sovereignty\u00a0and liberation<\/p>\n

BECAUSE while capital can move freely across borders, families\u00a0continue to be separated; when migrants try to cross borders, they\u00a0face fences, armed border guards and the security apparatus of\u00a0Fortress North America<\/p>\n

BECAUSE \u201cYou cannot have capitalism without racism\u201d(- Malcolm X)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Solidarity Across Borders, No One Is Illegal Montreal, JOC-Montreal,\u00a0the Immigrant Workers Center and Dignidad Migrante are organizing a\u00a0\u201cMigrant Rights are Workers Rights\u201d contingent in the May 1st\u00a0anti-capitalist demonstration.<\/p>\n
