The families of people killed by the police, along with their friends and their allies, are organizing the 5th annual commemorative vigil to remember those who have lost their lives at the hands of the police. These families, who face an uphill battle in uncovering the truth and obtaining justice for their loved ones, need our support.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the march is to:<\/strong>
\nREMEMBER the victims who lost their lives to police violence and abuse;<\/strong>
\nand<\/strong>
\nSUPPORT their families in any way we can.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We organize together on October 22 to coincide with the National Day of Protest in the United States organized by the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation, which has been mobilizing every year since 1996 (info:\u00a0www.october22.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n

This year, we denounce in particular the recent police killings of\u00a0Eric Garner\u00a0<\/strong>(July 17, 2014)\u00a0in New York City,\u00a0John Crawford<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(August 5 ,2014) in Beavercreek, Ohio, and\u00a0Mike Brown\u00a0<\/strong>(August 9, 2014)\u00a0in Ferguson, Missouri,\u00a0all black men murdered by the police this year. In solidarity with the demands of grassroots African-American organizations in the USA, we assert that: BLACK LIVES MATTER (for background to #BlackLivesMatter, please read:\u00a0http:\/\/thefeministwire.com\/2014\/10\/blacklivesmatter-2\/<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Justice for the Victims of Police Killings Coalition remembers\u00a0Anas Bennis<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(December 1, 2005),\u00a0Claudio Castagnetta<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(September 20, 2007),\u00a0Ben Matson<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(May 12, 2002),\u00a0Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Nadreau<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(February 16, 2012),\u00a0Quilem Registre<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(October 18, 2007),\u00a0Gladys Tolley<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(October 5, 2001) &\u00a0Fredy Villanueva<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(August 9, 2008), and we support their families and friends.<\/p>\n

In Montreal, there have been more than 90 people have been killed as a result of the actions of the Montreal police since the killing of 19 year-old black youth\u00a0Anthony Griffin<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in NDG in 1987. This includes the more recent killings of\u00a0Mario Hamel<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Patrick Limoges<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(June 7, 2011),\u00a0Farshad Mohammadi<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(January 6, 2012),\u00a0Robert H\u00e9nault<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(August 8, 2013),\u00a0Isidore Havis<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(August 17, 2013) and\u00a0Alain Magloire<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(February 4, 2014). We also highlight the death of\u00a0Guy Blouin<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in Quebec City on September 3, 2014, after he was hit by a police car while riding a bike, as well as the death of\u00a0Daniel Satre<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0on September 20, 2014 at Ballston Spa in upstate New York, who was tasered and beaten by police while in a state of crisis.<\/p>\n

This year, we also support all those who have survived police beatings. This includes\u00a0Didier Berry<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who was beaten and hospitalized by Montreal police on October 24, 2012;\u00a0Alexis Vadeboncoeur<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who was beaten by four officers in Trois-Rivi\u00e8res on February 2, 2013; and\u00a0Norbert Mestenapeo<\/em><\/strong>, a young Innu father who was brutally beaten by S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec police on July 16, 2013 in the community of Unamen Shipu on the North Shore.<\/p>\n

Join us in denouncing these and all the other examples of police violence and impunity.<\/p>\n

About the Justice for the Victims of Police Killings Coalition:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Justice for the Victims of Police Killings Coalition currently involves the family members and friends of Anas Bennis, Claudio Castagnetta, Ben Matson, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Nadreau, Quilem Registre, Gladys Tolley and Fredy Villanueva, all of whom died as a direct result of police actions and interventions. We continue to reach out to family and friends of other victims of police killings.<\/p>\n

This initiative came out of the Forum Against Police Violence and Impunity in 2010, during which the families expressed their desire to come together to remember their loved ones and strengthen their respective struggles for dignity, justice and the truth. The symbolic date of October 22 was subsequently chosen for a family-friendly event to commemorate the victims of police killings to coincide with the National Day of Protest in the United States organized by the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation, which has been mobilizing every year since 1996.<\/p>\n
