Community Fundraiser for Marcia

CHRISTMAS BRAWLGIVE THE GIFT OF THE REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH

Dear friends and allies,

Marcia is an undocumented member of Solidarity Across Borders who lost her vision two years ago due to Quebec’s refusal to give healthcare to undocumented migrants. Montreal Association for the Blind has refused to offer her readaption training (because of her status) and at the moment she is not able to work or get around by herself. Because of her status, she has no access to social assistance or subsidized housing.

We are again reaching out to community members to help cover her daily expenses as she waits for a response on her application for status. Any donation, any amount will help. We aim to raise enough to cover her expenses for a year, estimated at around 8500$.

Recurring monthly donations: For the past two years, Marcia’s rent has been paid by a “team of ten” – ten monthly donors who covered her rent. Please consider joining this group!! Click here to make monthly recurring donations (find paypal link in right column). Don’t forget to write “‘for marcia”.

One-time donations: ucaring (credit card): click here OR etransfer to solidaritesansfrontieres@gmail.com OR paypal (credit or paypal): click here (find paypal link in right column). Don’t forget to write “‘for marcia”.

MORE CONTEXT

We are writing to ask you to join in creating broader community support for migrants who are excluded from social programmes and made extra vulnerable to exploitation because of their immigration status. This small redistributive project is part of a broader vision of making Montreal into a Solidarity City and pushing borders out of our communities. Today we are specifically in need of one-time or monthly financial contributions to continue supporting one of Solidarity Across Borders (SAB)’s members.

Marcia is an undocumented member of Solidarity Across Borders who lost her vision two years ago due to Quebec’s refusal to give healthcare to migrants without state-authorized status. She has made incredible strides in regaining personal autonomy and with time (and training) will regain more but at the moment she is not able to work or get around by herself.

For two years, Montreal Association for the Blind (MAB) has consistently refused to offer Marcia help because of her immigration status. After Friends of Marcia launched a public campaign calling for access for all (in the wake of Denis Coderre’s announcement that Montreal was magically transformed into a sanctuary city), MAB sent written confirmation that Marcia was accepted into its adaptation programme. However, once her campaign was out of the limelight, MAB failed to follow through on its promise.

Working in super exploited positions – for families who don’t properly value domestic work – for more than thirty years in Canada, Marcia is left with no savings. Because of her status, she has no access to social assistance or subsidized housing or assisted living. Therefore, she currently relies entirely on donations from community members for all of her living expenses and health-related expenses.

We are again reaching out to community members to help cover her daily expenses as she waits for a response on her humanitarian & compassionate application for permanent residency. Any donation, any amount will help. We aim to raise enough to cover her living and medical expenses for a year, estimated at around 8500$.

We see these kinds of contributions as one part of a larger struggle against the injustices perpetrated by the Canadian immigration regime, which systematically criminalizes hundreds of thousands of undocumented people living in Canada.

Status, justice, and dignity for all!
