On Thursday, the CBSA refused Amadou’s request to suspend his deportation; on Friday, Amadou appealed to the Federal Court to stop the deportation. Community members in Scarborough and Halifax hand-delivered a letter and Amadou’s file to the riding offices of the Minister. On Thursday, Amadou’s MP spoke to the offices of Ministers Diab and Anandasangaree but both refused to intervene. Amadou’s deportation is still scheduled for 5pm tomorrow (Sunday, 19 April).
On Friday, Amadou and members of SAB and FNDC intercepted the Mayor of Montreal as she left a public event. The Mayor listened and promised to help. Although she has no formal power, she can: publicly express her opposition to the deportation (and to all deportations); use her networks and position to make calls behind the scenes to put pressure on Diab and Anandasangaree to intervene to stop the deportation; work to make Montreal a sanctuary city.

Video report (in French)
Amadou is a Senegalese activist and the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) recognized that Amadou was repeatedly arrested and tortured in his country of origin because of his involvement in a grassroots social movement challenging the government of Macky Sall (in power until 2024). Canada now plans to send him back to Senegal, even though Amadou is highly critical of the new government’s use of arbitrary detention, police brutality, and repression, which led to the death of a student activist in February. Amadou fears suffering the same abuses if he is deported.
In 2025, Canada deported over 22,500 people, with CBSA boasting a record. It is more important than ever to take action against the normalization of deportation and Canada’s cruel and deadly border policies, which are even worse now that Bill C12 has entered into force and the Safe Third Country Agreement has been strengthened.
